Joe Phillips

Garold "Joe" Phillips was born on May 10, 1940, in Oneonta, New York, to Mildred Juanita Phillips and Garold Dean Phillips. He passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his immediate family.

Joe was the beloved husband of Kay and a proud father to Laura, Gregg, and Tiffany. He lived his life with deep love, loyalty, and pride for the family he so fiercely protected. His devotion to those he loved was evident in everything he did.

Joe spent most of his career working as an optician, a profession he took great pride in. He found genuine satisfaction in helping people look and feel their best. Outside of work, his passions were many-sports (especially Ohio State football), golf, animals, family, and friends. These interests brought him great joy and connection throughout his life.

Joe is survived by his wife of 62 years, Beverly "Kay" Phillips (Young); daughters Laura Gundler (Chris) and Tiffany Cheairs (Bryan Sr.); and son Gregg Phillips (Susan). He was a proud grandfather to Lindsey Unger (Anthony), Landon Hutchison (Tayler), Jake Gundler (Caroline), Lindsay Gundler, Ethan Gundler, AJ Gundler, Alex Phillips, Sam Phillips, Aubrey Berther, Bryan Cheairs Jr., Brady Cheairs (Ashleigh), and Rachel Cheairs. He was also blessed with great‑grandchildren Kipley Unger, Landry Unger, Heath Hutchison, Nolan Cheairs, and Nora Cheairs.

Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Breese, and his father, Garold Phillips.

Arrangements are being handled by Taylor‑Theller Funeral Home in Amanda, Ohio.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, March 28, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., with a service to immediately follow.
