I met Gary in 1976 when Western Electric, the company I worked for, transferred me from Chicago to Columbus. He sat behind me in our office. We became friends when we realized we had the same interests in the shooting sports and hunting.
Gary was president of our gun club at work. We shot in bullseye matches at the Olentangy range and at the Columbus police academy. Gary later became match director at Pickaway County Sportsmen Club for our silhouette division. We shot those matches once a month from April to October.
Gary was my best man and Marilyn was my wife Lu's maid of honor at our wedding in 1977. They also were there 25 years later when Lu and I renewed our vows and celebrated our anniversary.
I always looked forward to Fall when the temperature got cooler and the leaves started to turn colors. This was the time Gary and I began our hunting season. We hunted squirrels, rabbits and deer. Gary was with me when I got my first deer and I was with him when he got his last deer, which happen to be the biggest buck he ever shot. I always felt I should get credit for that buck because I did all the work chasing it to him and all he did was shoot it. Just kidding Gary.
It was never about getting squirrels or rabbits or deer. It was about spending time with each other and enjoying God's gifts of beauty in the woods and fields.
There will be a big void in my life now that Gary is gone. Gary was my hunting partner and my best friend and I will miss him very much.
